We race upside down aeroplanes and call it motor racing these days. You start in the front, you stay in the front and you end in the front. You may not succeed not from driver error but more likely from machincal failure. You see a tiny bit of helmet and nothing else. Make the cockpit safer for sure, but get rid of the wings and narrow the tyres or give them full tread or harder compound..
Una sola parola EROICI!!!
Correre su quelle auto e su quelle piste soprattutto.
The really early formula cars had no downforce, it was all mechanical grip at the corners. But, as Gustavotenis said, most cars would take flight at a certain speed. Fortunately, Formula 1 speeds in the 1950s weren’t high enough for that to happen.
All race cars have downforce, otherwise they would fly when reach a certain speed, I think.
the simple fact that the height of the rear of the car is slightly higher than the height of the front of this car already features “downforce” to me.
@Gustavotenis you have no aerodynamic downforce and you dont fly either…
no down force?are the cars flying?
Real racing ! no electronics, no downforce, no safety, slippery tires … just guts and driving skills !
back in the years the drivers where heroes as well as badasses
true racing, enough said
Ascari was also a good sportcar racer won the chapionchip WSCC two times
no seat belts and no helmets
Flying cars on Nordschleife from ’60s, well that is the real challenge and real race!

well said smr1967…. I was born in 84… when men still drove these cars … none of these kids did that now drive in F1. …… One thing about Formula One is that it has a RICH history……
And flag men were VERY camp..
back when drivers were men not boys.
the old cars where really beautiful! But damn dangerus, and in shocked that they wasn’t wearing helmets.
The true heroes of motorsport.

wonderful formula1 history thanks you very much
Their Legend will last forever.
Now this is from back in the day when men were men and sheep were nervous… LOL!… Driving these cars was not unlike driving a bomb!!!… And the drivers were wearing minimal safety gear… All at 150mph plus!!!…. WOW!!!
Actually the F1 world championship is what started in 1950…
Formula 1 History 1947-1967, funny that as F1 started in 1950.
Stirling Moss the comment.
Phil Hill was the last driver to win a Grand Prix in a front engined car I believe.
