We race upside down aeroplanes and call it motor racing these days. You start in the front, you stay in the front and you end in the front. You may not succeed not from driver error but more likely from machincal failure. You see a tiny bit of helmet and nothing else. Make the cockpit safer for sure, but get rid of the wings and narrow the tyres or give them full tread or harder compound..

The really early formula cars had no downforce, it was all mechanical grip at the corners. But, as Gustavotenis said, most cars would take flight at a certain speed. Fortunately, Formula 1 speeds in the 1950s weren’t high enough for that to happen.

  • Gustavotenis dice:

All race cars have downforce, otherwise they would fly when reach a certain speed, I think.

the simple fact that the height of the rear of the car is slightly higher than the height of the front of this car already features “downforce” to me.

@Gustavotenis you have no aerodynamic downforce and you dont fly either…

well said smr1967…. I was born in 84… when men still drove these cars … none of these kids did that now drive in F1. …… One thing about Formula One is that it has a RICH history……

Now this is from back in the day when men were men and sheep were nervous… LOL!… Driving these cars was not unlike driving a bomb!!!… And the drivers were wearing minimal safety gear… All at 150mph plus!!!…. WOW!!!
